OUR CERAMIC PRODUCER MARIO
Every company can look back on one particular collaboration that has fundamentally shaped and accompanied its individual development. For us, that collaboration is with Mario. Mario grew up in a family of potters and had just taken over the management of the family business when we started looking for a manufacturer to found onomao. The TRADITIONAL collection is manufactured in Mario's factory, among others. Since 2018, all shapes have been created here from clay sourced in the region. Along the way – from the first samples to the current series – we have learned a great deal about materials, processes and durability.
THE CLASSIC CERAMIC MANUFACTORY
In the course of developing our second tableware collection CLASSIC we went in search of another ceramic manufacturer. We landed at a family business in the rolling hills behind Porto. The family looks back on a long ceramic tradition. Working with clay has been consistently passed down and specialized from generation to generation.
Our CLASSIC collection is tamped by hand before being cleaned and refined after a drying process to be glazed before firing. Creative hand-painting is part of the manufacturer's hobbyhorse. Thus CLASSIC gets her stripes missed in loving handwork in the small studio.
Where ABERTA is created
Our third ceramics collection is produced in a ceramics factory in central Portugal. The factory was founded in 1988 by a family with a long tradition in the ceramics industry and more than fifty years of experience in ceramics production. Over the years, the company has continued to develop without losing sight of the traditional elements that characterise the Alcobaça region. Among other things, they specialise in hand painting. We really like this combination of tradition and modernity. Our ABERTA collection is the first collection we have had produced in Alcobaça.
Our porcelain factory
The place where these delicate pieces are created also brings harmony to the collection. The porcelain factory is located near Aveiro, in the cool north of Portugal. The small company specialises in the production of aesthetic home accessories and tableware. Delicate shapes are handcrafted by a small team. We share the joy of design and clay, which is shaped into many small works of art in this beautiful place.
Where is onomao glass made?
Our glasses and the carafe are made at a glassworks in Poland. It was founded in 1986 – though the craft itself is older than the company: since 1957 it has been handed down within the family, from one generation to the next, learned at the blowpipe rather than in a classroom.
Everything is blown by mouth. What the glassblowers do there is hard to describe and harder still to imitate: they gather the molten glass, turn, blow, shape – and let go the moment it sits right. Alongside our glasses, the workshop produces vases, series of drinking glasses and artistic pieces.
The material is used glass. The glassworks specialises in working with recycled glass: bottles and preserving jars, melted down and blown anew. Our glasses and carafes are made from 99% of it, the remaining one percent is soda ash. The delicate green shimmer in the clear glass comes from the material itself.
