An interview with Miriam Jacks from JACKS beauty line
Miriam Jacks is the founder of JACKS beauty line. The Berlin-based brand stands for vegan make-up, skincare and handmade brushes. Miriam has been working in the beauty industry for 20 years and, in addition to her own brand, she also has a weekly podcast, the “Glowcast”, in which she discusses her favorite topic - the connection between outer and inner beauty - with various guests.
Three collaborative products have been created with onomao focusing on the morning beauty routine: A brush holder, a cup and a vase.
In this interview, we spoke to Miriam about her experiences of founding the company, her beauty essentials and feel-good routines.
How did you discover your passion for make-up and self-care?
I would like to answer this question differently: more like how I rediscovered my passion. I've actually been in the industry for 20 years and worked as a make-up artist for a long time. But then I wanted to work in interiors and design because the beauty industry was too superficial for me.
The pandemic brought back my passion for make-up and self-care. We were all at home and I was forced back into the beauty world. But then I completely rediscovered it for myself. I asked myself: why not do it all according to my own rules? Why does everything always have to be perfect? Why can't beauty be about developing your inner beauty and exploring the question? What really is true beauty?
And so I rediscovered self-care and self-love for myself. Since then, make-up is no longer something superficial for me, but something that I use to touch many people by showing them how they can do something good for themselves with make-up and skincare, even in difficult times. At the same time, I have fulfilled my heart's desire and discovered this topic in such a way that I was able to build a large company out of it.
What inspires you when developing new beauty products?
First and foremost, I'm inspired by our own customers, my own needs and the desire to make beauty something uncomplicated and beautiful that is also good for me. The people we work with - in the laboratories, for example - also inspire me, as they are always coming up with new formulations and rethinking products so that ingredients and performance match. Anyone who knows me knows that I never launch products on the market that contain bad ingredients or harm the environment. I try to create products that appeal to people who have previously rejected beauty and have found a new approach to it. I am also inspired by the feedback from our customers about what they are still missing in their beauty routine. Offering a minimalist range and still covering everything - that's our goal.

Which beauty product is your personal essential and should never be missing?
It's super difficult to decide on one product. Maybe I can name three: Glow foundation, bronzer and mascara. These are my three essentials that help me to look fresh quickly. And perhaps my essential is the glow foundation because it really is the basis for beautiful, radiant skin.
What is the biggest learning for you from founding JACKS beauty line?
In any case, everything takes much longer than you think. Nothing happens overnight and you need a lot of patience - especially in product development, when you have to take into account all the tests that a product goes through.
What does your morning routine look like?
There is a dream morning routine and a reality morning routine. The desired routine is not always possible due to my two small children, but when I can implement it, I drink a large glass of warm water with lemon after getting up. Then I brush my teeth and scrape my tongue. Ideally, I would then do a round of yoga or exercise and meditate. However, as there is often no time for this in the morning, I try to at least do a body check-in: How am I feeling? What are my plans for the day? I usually journal and write down how I want to spend the day and what I would like to achieve that day. Then I make myself a fresh green juice and a black tea with milk and honey and get some delicious bread from my husband, who makes breakfast for the children, before I go to work.
The cooperation products with onomao are designed to accompany your morning beauty routine and turn it into a holistic experience. What does a beautifully furnished home mean to you?
For me, a beautifully designed environment is incredibly important for my well-being. I love it when everything is tidy, there are fresh flowers on the table and I simply have an environment in which I feel really comfortable. That's why I think the collaboration with onomao is so special, because the products help to create my aesthetic well-being in the morning.
Is there a design detail in the onomao collaboration that you are particularly proud of?
I have to say that I find onomao's designs incredibly beautiful and love them. I'm particularly proud of our brush holder, which onomao created especially for us. On the one hand it's a beautiful design element, and on the other hand it also shows off our beautiful hand-painted brush styles. So it's a perfect combination of onomao and JACKS beauty line.

Your “Glowcast” is about the path to inner beauty. How do you find the balance between valuable personal development and delusional self-optimization?
If you also watch my Glowcast on YouTube, you will occasionally see the beautiful onomao cups in the picture. The Glowcast is actually a huge passion of mine and a project close to my heart, because I talk a lot about how to achieve your true inner glow. I truly believe that when we radiate from within, are happy, follow our heart and do what our soul desires, we also radiate outwards. Then we are much happier on the outside and are not distracted by many little things and external appearances. In my opinion, striving for inner beauty has a huge impact on outer beauty, and I talk about this with my guests on the Glowcast.
You combine outer and inner beauty. What rituals help you to feel good all round?
I think the most important thing is to really take time for yourself and invest in yourself. I don't mean a session with a beauty doctor, but actual coaching sessions, retreats and time out to reflect, work through issues and, above all, let things go. I am convinced that learning to love yourself leads to much more beauty and satisfaction.
