Tischlein deck dich – A little how to for a beautiful table setting
Hosting a dinner for friends or family is a sign of appreciation. A beautifully set table is the starting point for a welcoming atmosphere, and with a little thought, it's really no magic trick. We've put together a small guide with inspiration and ideas to help everything run smoothly so you can truly enjoy the time together.
The Preparation
It's worth taking a few moments to think things through beforehand. What food will be served? How many courses are there? Is there a theme or motif? Could individual ingredients be reflected and echoed in the décor?
To what extent can the setting and surroundings be incorporated into the table design? A colour concept with 1–2 main colours is always a safe bet.
A mix of materials with different textures — such as textiles, ceramic tableware, and natural elements — is always a lovely touch.
The Foundation
The framework for the table design is a tablecloth, for example in cotton or linen. For a more relaxed look, the natural grain of a wooden table, or the stone or glass surface, can also take centre stage. Matching napkins complement the table linen and can simply be placed beside the plate or used as a placemat underneath it.
The Tableware
The crockery is the centrepiece of the table and creates a canvas for the dishes being presented. Depending on the menu, various plates and bowls can be chosen. For most dinners, large plates for a main course, a deep plate for soup or salad, and a small dessert plate work well. If you're going for a more relaxed feel, a large serving or salad bowl for sharing makes a great impression.

The décor
You don't need much when it comes to décor. Natural elements such as flowers, some greenery, and also fruit, vegetables, and herbs already go a long way. Feel free to get creative with small DIY touches — like repurposing a candlestick as a vase, as shown here. The look comes together beautifully when, for example, the colour of the flowers is coordinated with details in the tablecloth.
Just before the meal
Now it's time to set the mood. Choose some good music, light the candles, open the wine, and perhaps pour the aperitif. Welcome your guests, relax, and enjoy!
