The vegetation changes and the air shows its own aroma. Our path leads us into the world of sheep and shepherds. At an altitude of almost 2000 meters, we end up in the Manteigas region in Serra da Estrela, the mountains of Portugal. And at the manufactory that processes the wool of the sheep.
The family business has been in operation since 1925, and the region and the manufactory have always worked with sheep. The milk is used to produce cheese specialties - the shorn fur is used to make high-quality wool.
The wool for our blankets also comes from the immediate surroundings of the manufactory. So we were able to get to know the sheep and the shepherd personally.
The manufactory specializes in high-quality felt fabrics and soft wool blankets. From spinning the shorn wool to weaving: the creation process of the wool blankets takes place entirely in the manufactory. Delicate wool threads are stretched on the looms in a three-day process to weave the particular pattern. The colors are pure natural colors of the sheep. For example, the brown of a pattern is obtained from a sheep with brown fur.
This cycle of recycling - with products from free, happy animals - appeals to us very much. The quality of the wool blankets as well.
Produced in Portugal
The sheep of our wool blankets live in the immediate surroundings of the manufactory in the region of Manteigas, the highest region of Portugal. This is located in Serra da Estrela. The family business has existed since 1925 and is known for the quality of its wool products.
Our wool
It is the most resistant fiber of animal origin, 100% natural and, like human hair, contains a protein called keratin. During growth, it is lubricated by the sebaceous glands, which secrete a waxy substance whose main component is lanolin. Being biodegradable and renewable, the sheep produces wool year after year, which is sheared for its own good. It is naturally elastic and comfortable and is used as a natural thermal insulator.
Shearing
Spring is the right time to shear the sheep's wool so that it can grow until the next winter. Starting with the legs, the wool should be removed in one go. About 6 kg of wool is obtained from each sheep, of which only 3 kg is fine wool.
Spinning
Spinning can be done with a manual or electric spindle that transforms the wool into yarn, twisting it to obtain yarn of the desired thickness.
SELECTION
Only the best quality wool is used for Our wool blankets, which comes from the back of the animal and is the longest and cleanest. The wool from the bottom is very short and the back area is very dirty.
Weaving
The fabric is made by interweaving weft and warp threads. This type of weaving was already known in the Paleolithic Age.
